Baoshan

保山

Western Yunnan's Southern Silk Road crossroads, linking coffee valleys, hot springs, and the Gaoligong Mountains.

Set in a broad valley between the Lancang and Nu rivers, Baoshan (historically known as Yongchang) has been western Yunnan's main trading post along the Southern Silk Road for over two millennia. Today it balances a relaxed urban center in Longyang District with the dramatic biodiversity of the Gaoligong Mountains and the geothermal towns of neighbouring Tengchong, which falls under its wider prefecture. The surrounding Lujiangba valley also produces some of China's best small-bean arabica coffee.

Give the city itself one to two days, or allow three to four if you include Heshun Ancient Town and the mountain trails. Base yourself near Taibao Mountain in Longyang District for easy walks to local markets and old lanes, or stay out in Heshun if you prefer historic courtyard inns. Top day trips include hiking the ancient stone-paved trails across Gaoligong Mountain, visiting the coffee estates of Lujiangba, and soaking in local thermal waters. Baoshan pairs naturally with Dali to the east, Tengchong and Ruili to the west, or a dramatic overland run north up the Nujiang Valley. It suits unhurried travelers, hikers, and WWII history buffs exploring the Burma Road, though travelers expecting polished resort towns may find Longyang's urban center plain.

Travel tips

Distinguish Longyang from Tengchong, Rail connections onward to Tengchong, Hire a guide for Gaoligong hikes +1

  • Distinguish Longyang from Tengchong

Baoshan is both a prefecture and an urban seat (Longyang District). Heshun and the volcano parks lie about two hours west in county-level Tengchong, so check hotel addresses carefully before booking.

  • Rail connections onward to Tengchong

The high-speed train currently drops you in Baoshan's Longyang District. Direct shuttle buses and official ride-shares wait outside the station plaza to carry passengers onward to Tengchong.

  • Hire a guide for Gaoligong hikes

Many sections of the Gaoligong Mountain nature reserve require registration or a local village guide from trailheads like Baihualing. Arrange this through your guesthouse a day in advance.

  • Try local Baoshan coffee and snacks

Skip international chains and look for independent cafes serving locally roasted Lujiangba arabica, and try huoshao (flaky baked flatbreads) along the streets of Banqiao or Longyang.
