Changzhou
常州
A Grand Canal city pairing a 13-story golden Buddhist pagoda with major family theme parks.
Sitting midway between Shanghai and Nanjing on the Grand Canal, Changzhou is an approachable Yangtze Delta city that blends Ming- and Qing-era canal lanes with sprawling modern theme parks. While neighbors like Suzhou and Wuxi draw the biggest heritage crowds, Changzhou stands out for the towering golden pagoda at Tianning Temple, the preserved triple-moat earthworks of ancient Yancheng, and the massive China Dinosaur Park.
One to two days is plenty for most travelers. Base yourself in Tianning District near Cultural Plaza or Qingguo Lane for easy metro access and evening canal walks. For a scenic day trip, head south to Liyang for Tianmu Lake and the Nanshan Bamboo Sea. Changzhou slots into a high-speed rail route linking Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuxi, and Nanjing. It is a great match for families with kids and travelers who enjoy relaxed canal neighborhoods without heavy tour-group crowds, though first-time visitors to China seeking blockbuster imperial monuments may feel underwhelmed.
