Day trip or overnight from Dali
Erhai Lake
洱海
Cycle a car-free lakeside trail past Bai courtyard villages, waterfront cafes, and the peaks of Cangshan Mountain.
Stretching 42 kilometers along the eastern base of the Cangshan Mountain range in Dali, Erhai Lake is the centerpiece of Yunnan's Bai ethnic heartland. It is a lived-in landscape where whitewashed villages, terraced fields, and modern coffee shops sit right at the water's edge. A dedicated ecological corridor keeps motor traffic off large sections of the western shore, which makes the lake one of the best places in China for casual cycling and unhurried walks.
Give the lake two to three days to explore properly. Most independent travelers base themselves near Dali Old Town or Longkan Wharf on the west shore for easy bike access, or across the water in Shuanglang for dramatic sunset views over the mountains. Easy nearby day trips include the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple, hiking the Cloud Traveler's Path high on Cangshan Mountain, and visiting the traditional Bai market town of Shaxi. Dali and Erhai Lake fit naturally between Kunming, Lijiang, and Shangri-La on a classic Yunnan overland route. The area suits slow travelers, cyclists, and photographers, while visitors expecting untouched nature or fast-paced sightseeing may find its café-lined shores too commercial.

01Cycling the Erhai Ecological Corridor
A paved, car-free path hugs the western shoreline from Yangnanxi north toward Xizhou, passing wetland boardwalks, willow groves, and lakeside cafes. Rent a pedal bike at an entrance point like Longkan Wharf or Caicun for a flat, scenic ride with Cangshan Mountain in the background.
必看02Shuanglang Ancient Town
Set on the northeastern shore, this former fishing village is known for upscale boutique stays, waterfront terraces, and wide views across the lake toward the mountains. Walk out to Yuji Island at the tip of the peninsula or watch the sunset from a café by the water.
必看03Xizhou Ancient Town
Just inland from the western shore, Xizhou preserves ornate Bai courtyard mansions and a lively morning market where locals buy produce and crisp baked flatbreads called Xizhou baba. A short walk or ride east brings you to Haishe Park on a quiet peninsula jutting into the lake.
04Zhoucheng Village Tie-Dye Workshops
Located just north of Xizhou near the lake's northern curve, Zhoucheng is the center of traditional Bai indigo tie-dyeing. Visitors can tour family-run courtyard workshops and try tying and dyeing their own cloth using natural plant indigo.
05Little Putuo Island and Wase
Along the quieter eastern shore, tiny Little Putuo Island holds a two-story pavilion built on a limestone rock just offshore, surrounded by gulls in winter. Nearby Wase hosts a colorful periodic rural market that draws villagers from around the lake.

Know the e-bike rules
Private gas scooters and outside rental e-bikes are banned from the western Erhai Ecological Corridor. Within the corridor you must walk, ride a pedal bike, use shared bikes, or board the official sightseeing shuttles, while rental e-bikes are fine on the eastern lake road.
Prepare for high-altitude sun
Erhai Lake sits at nearly 2,000 meters above sea level, where UV rays are intense even on cloudy or breezy days. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a windproof layer for afternoon gusts coming off Cangshan Mountain.
Pace yourself on the full loop
The complete road circuit around Erhai Lake is roughly 130 kilometers and is too long for a casual one-day pedal bike ride. Either focus on a 15-to-20-kilometer section of the western corridor or split the full loop into two days with an overnight stay in Shuanglang.
Respect lake protection rules
Erhai is a strictly protected drinking water source, so swimming, wading, and unauthorized fishing are prohibited along the shoreline. Stick to marked paths and piers to avoid fines from local patrols.
How to get to Erhai Lake
Most visitors arrive via Dali Railway Station at the southern tip of the lake in Xiaguan. High-speed trains connect Dali with Kunming in about 2 hours and Lijiang in roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. Dali Fengyi Airport sits on the southeastern shore and handles domestic flights from Kunming and major Chinese cities. From the train station or airport, taxis, ride-hailing cars, and local buses reach Dali Old Town and western lakeshore villages like Caicun in 40 to 60 minutes, while driving to Shuanglang on the northeastern shore takes about an hour.
