Danxia Mountain
丹霞山
The namesake of China's red-bed sandstone landforms, where rust-colored cliffs and bizarre stone pillars rise above the Jinjiang River.
Danxia Mountain, just northeast of Shaoguan in northern Guangdong, is the birthplace of the geological term Danxia landform. This UNESCO Global Geopark and World Heritage site is famous for hundreds of flat-topped red sandstone buttes, sheer vertical cliffs, and eroded pillars that glow crimson at sunrise and sunset. Unlike China's towering granite peaks, the terrain here is relatively low in elevation, weaving together lush subtropical valleys, cliffside Buddhist temples, and the winding Jinjiang River.
Give the park one full day or an overnight stay to catch sunrise from Zhanglao Peak. The smartest place to base yourself is in the guesthouse village of瑤塘 (Yaotang) right inside the park gate, or in downtown Shaoguan if you prefer city dining. Easy nearby half-day trips include Nanhua Temple, the historic home of the Sixth Patriarch of Chan Buddhism, and the Guangdong Grand Canyon in Ruyuan. Because Shaoguan sits directly on the main north-south high-speed rail line, Danxia Mountain pairs naturally with Guangzhou, Shenzhen, or Changsha. It is ideal for photographers, geologists, and casual hikers, though travelers seeking high-alpine wilderness or uncrowded backcountry trails may find the paved walkways and novelty rock formations underwhelming.

Highlights
Zhanglao Peak (Elder Peak), Yangyuan Rock, Jinjiang River Cruise +3
01Zhanglao Peak (Elder Peak)
The highest and most classic viewpoint sector in the park, reachable by cable car or steep stone stairs. Its Guari Pavilion is the premier spot for watching sunrise over a sea of red sandstone ridges.
必看02Yangyuan Rock
A freestanding, 28-meter-tall sandstone pillar eroded into an unmistakably phallic shape that draws crowds across the river from Zhanglao Peak. Trails continue past the rock up to嘉遁亭 (Jiadun Pavilion) for wide valley views.
必看03Jinjiang River Cruise
A gentle boat ride along the winding river that cuts through the eastern edge of the geopark. From the water, you get unobstructed views of red cliffs and formations like the Sleeping Beauty ridge without climbing a step.
04Xianglong Lake and Yinyuan Stone
A quiet emerald lake tucked into the southern valley below Zhanglao Peak, crossed by small ferries or a lakeside footpath. The trail beyond leads through a mossy gorge to Yinyuan Stone, a natural cleft in the rock that complements Yangyuan Rock.

05Jinshi Rock Temple
A thousand-year-old Buddhist grotto temple built directly into a shallow sandstone overhang on the lower slopes of Zhanglao Peak. Its halls sit behind a cliffside walkway with views straight down into the river gorge.
06Dan Ladder Iron-Chain Climb
A near-vertical staircase carved straight into the red cliff face on Zhanglao Peak, flanked by iron chains for handholds. It offers an exhilarating shortcut to the upper ridge for hikers comfortable with heights.

Use the 48-hour ticket window
Standard park admission covers two consecutive days and includes the internal shuttle buses between trailheads. Keep your ticket stub or ID handy, as you will scan it at each separate sector entrance.
Sleep inside the gate for sunrise
If you want to watch sunrise from Zhanglao Peak, book a guesthouse right inside the park entrance area. Public buses from Shaoguan do not run early enough to get you to the trailhead before dawn.
Store bags at the visitor center
If you are visiting Danxia Mountain in transit between high-speed trains, use the luggage storage lockers and counters at the main visitor center rather than hauling backpacks up the steep steps.
Watch your footing on wet sandstone
The carved sandstone steps and narrow cliff paths become slick after rain or morning mist. Wear shoes with solid rubber grip, and skip the near-vertical Dan Ladder if the rock is wet.

How to get to Danxia Mountain
Most travelers arrive via Shaoguan Station on the Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway, roughly 50 minutes north of Guangzhou South Station and 1.5 hours from Shenzhen North. From the plaza outside Shaoguan Station, direct tourist shuttle buses and taxis make the 50-minute trip northeast to the Danxia Mountain main gate in Renhua County. If you arrive by conventional train at Shaoguan East Station in the old city center, regular buses also run straight to the park entrance. The nearest major air hub is Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, though the smaller Shaoguan Danxia Airport handles a handful of domestic flights.
