Detian Waterfall

德天瀑布

Asia's largest transnational waterfall, where the Guichun River drops down three limestone tiers along the China-Vietnam border.

All destinations/Detian Waterfall

Set in Daxin County within Chongzuo City, Guangxi, Detian Waterfall is Asia's largest transnational waterfall and the fourth largest along a national border worldwide. Fed by the Guichun River as it winds between China and Vietnam, the water plunges over 60 meters across three broad limestone tiers, standing right beside Vietnam's Ban Gioc Falls across the river channel. Framed by steep karst peaks and lush subtropical greenery, the falls merge into a single 200-meter-wide curtain of water during the summer flood season.

Most travelers need one to two days here, basing themselves either near the scenic gate in Shuolong Town or 40 minutes away among the riverside rice paddies of Mingshi Pastoral Scenery. Combining the falls with a half-day cycling or bamboo-raft trip through Mingshi and a hike into nearby Tongling Grand Canyon in Jingxi makes a rewarding weekend loop. It pairs naturally with Nanning, Guilin, or Beihai on a southern China route. Photographers and slow-travel nature lovers will enjoy the borderland karst scenery, though travelers expecting raw, untouched wilderness may be put off by the large visitor center and commercial walkways.

Travel tips

Arrive for morning light, Carry your passport, Account for the shuttle transfer +1

  • Arrive for morning light

Visit before noon so the sun illuminates the face of the waterfall; in the afternoon the cascades are backlit, which makes photography harder. Midday around noon is also when upstream dams often release extra water.

  • Carry your passport

Daxin County sits directly on the international frontier, and border police checkpoints along the highway as well as the scenic area ticket office require valid passports for foreign visitors.

  • Account for the shuttle transfer

The main visitor center sits several kilometers from the waterfall itself, so factor in about 20 minutes each way on the internal sightseeing bus when planning your return transport.

  • Bring waterproof gear

Spray from the falls is heavy during the summer high-water season, especially on the bamboo rafts and lower boardwalks, so pack a light poncho and a dry bag for cameras and phones.
