Day trip or overnight from Foshan

Shunde

顺德

The culinary heartland of Cantonese cooking, where Lingnan gardens and canal villages meet legendary buffalo-milk desserts and fish

Officially a district of Foshan in Guangdong's Pearl River Delta, Shunde functions like its own distinct city and holds UNESCO City of Gastronomy status. Cantonese locals revere it as the birthplace of their finest chefs, a place where humble ingredients like freshwater fish and water-buffalo milk are turned into intricate dishes through centuries-old techniques. Beyond the dining tables, Shunde preserves classical Lingnan architecture, shaded pedestrian arcades and quiet canal towns.

Plan on one to two days here, basing yourself in Daliang, the historic center where Qinghui Garden, Huagai Road and the best dessert shops sit within walking distance of Foshan Metro Line 3. From Daliang, it is an easy excursion out to Fengjian Water Village or north into central Foshan's Zumiao area for martial arts heritage and ceramics. Shunde pairs naturally with Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong or Macau on a southern China itinerary. It is ideal for food-focused travelers and slow walkers who enjoy neighborhood life, though visitors chasing monumental landmarks or dramatic natural scenery may come away underwhelmed.

Highlights

Shunde Cuisine, Qinghui Garden, Huagai Road and Jinbang Upper Street +2

  • 01Shunde Cuisine

Famed across China for its obsession with freshness, Shunde cooking shines in dishes like thinly sliced freshwater fish, sauna chicken steamed over boiling broth, and roast goose. Eat at busy neighborhood cantinas in Daliang and Ronggui.

  • 02Qinghui Garden

One of the four great classical gardens of Guangdong, this Ming-origin estate in central Daliang layers koi ponds, rockeries, covered walkways and colorful Manchurian stained-glass windows into a compact, shaded maze.

  • 03Huagai Road and Jinbang Upper Street

Just steps from Qinghui Garden, Pastel-colored Republican-era arcades along Huagai Road lead toward Jinbang Upper Street, a narrow alley famous for traditional shops making double-skin steamed milk, ginger milk curd and fried milk rolls.

  • 04Fengjian Water Village

A laid-back canal settlement in Xingtan town crossed by Song-dynasty stone bridges and lined with ancestral halls and banyan trees. It makes a peaceful half-day trip by taxi from Daliang.

  • 05Bijiang Golden Lounge

Located in Beijiao town, this historic clan complex is known for its exquisite gold-leaf wood carvings, grey-brick buildings and quiet courtyards that see far fewer visitors than Daliang.

Travel tips

Travel with a small group, Beat the restaurant queues, Set up mobile payment and translation +1

  • Travel with a small group

Many signature Cantonese dishes, such as whole steamed fish or claypot rice, are portioned for sharing. Coming with two to four people lets you sample far more than dining solo.

  • Beat the restaurant queues

Famous spots in Daliang and Ronggui draw huge weekend crowds from Guangzhou. Arrive right when doors open for lunch around 11:00 am or dinner around 5:00 pm to avoid waiting for hours.

  • Set up mobile payment and translation

English menus are rare even at well-known restaurants. Have Alipay or WeChat Pay ready on your phone, and use their built-in translation tools to scan QR-code table menus.

  • Book Qinghui Garden on your phone

During weekends and holidays, Qinghui Garden uses timed entry slots on its WeChat mini-program. Foreign passport holders who cannot book ahead online can usually register at the ticket window, so bring your physical passport.
