Golmud
格尔木
A rugged Qaidam Basin frontier town where emerald salt pans meet the high passes of the Qinghai-Tibet Highway.
Set at the southern edge of the Qaidam Basin at around 2,800 meters, Golmud is a functional frontier city built around salt mining and overland logistics. For independent travelers, it is the primary staging post where the desert floor begins its steep climb up the Kunlun Mountains onto the Tibetan Plateau. While the urban grid itself is modern and utilitarian, the surrounding landscapes feature some of western China's starkest geology, from vast potash lakes to high-altitude wilderness.
Plan on one to two days here, basing yourself near the city center around Kunlun Middle Road or close to Golmud Railway Station for easy transport access. Use the city as a base for day trips north to Qarhan Salt Lake and Da Qaidam Emerald Lake, or south up the Qinghai-Tibet Highway to Kunlun Mountain Pass. Golmud pairs naturally with Xining, Dunhuang, and Lhasa on a Qinghai-Gansu loop or overland Tibet route. It suits road-trippers, photographers, and overland adventurers, while travelers looking for historic architecture or walkable old neighborhoods will likely feel underwhelmed.

Tibet permit regulations
Foreign travelers cannot independently board buses or trains south of Golmud toward Lhasa or drive beyond Kunlun Pass into the Tibet Autonomous Region without an organized tour and Tibet Travel Permit.
Acclimatize before climbing
Golmud sits at a manageable 2,800 meters. It is an ideal place to sleep and adjust before heading up to Kunlun Pass at 4,768 meters, where acute altitude sickness is a real risk.
Hire a private car for sights
Public transit to Qarhan Salt Lake and the Kunlun Mountains is sparse or nonexistent; arrange a local taxi charter or join a day-trip carpool through your hotel the night before.
Pack extreme sun protection
The combination of high altitude, desert air, and blinding reflection off the white salt flats requires polarized sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, and plenty of drinking water.
