Moganshan
莫干山
Cool bamboo-forested hills dotted with early twentieth-century stone villas and contemporary countryside guesthouses.
Moganshan is a cool, bamboo-cloaked mountain retreat in northern Zhejiang Province that first gained fame in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a summer hill station for Shanghai expats and Chinese elites. Unlike China's grand sacred peaks with their exhausting stone staircases and temple crowds, this range is defined by quiet forest trails, stone-built colonial villas, and rural villages converted into design-forward boutique guesthouses.
Give Moganshan two to three days to slow down and hike. Most visitors base themselves in Yucun at the mountain's foot for easy access to cafes and trailheads, or in quieter valley villages like Xiantan and Houwu for countryside guesthouses. For easy day trips, head to nearby Xiazhu Lake National Wetland Park or the historic canal town of Xinshi in Deqing County. Situated right between Shanghai and Hangzhou, Moganshan pairs with either city as a rural breather on an eastern China itinerary. It is ideal for hikers, cyclists, and travelers seeking slow-paced mountain air, though sightseers hunting for monumental landmarks or buzzing nightlife will likely feel underwhelmed.

01Moganshan Bamboo Forest Trails
Dense moso bamboo blankets over ninety percent of the mountain slopes, shading a network of stone paths and dirt hiking trails. The scenic walk from Yucun up to the ridge offers cool shade and sweeping valley views.
必看02Yinshan Street and the Historic Villas
This high-altitude village street sits near the mountain crest and is lined with early twentieth-century stone cottages built by foreign missionaries and Shanghai notables. Nearby paths lead to preserved Republican-era residences, including Chiang Kai-shek's former lodge at Songyue Villa.
必看03Sword Pond (Jianchi)
Named after the ancient legend of swordsmiths Gan Jiang and Mo Ye, this terraced gorge features a four-tiered waterfall plunging into dark rock pools. Stone steps wind past cliffside inscriptions, viewing pavilions, and shaded bamboo groves.
04Yucun Village
Serving as the lively gateway at the base of the mountain, Yucun blends Republican-era architecture with converted cultural spaces, independent roasteries, and bakeries. It is the best place to grab coffee and supplies before heading up into the hills.
05Luhuadang Park
Located near the upper ridge, this quiet mountain park combines reed marshes, swan pools, and old stone fountains with panoramic lookouts. It is a peaceful spot for an easy stroll away from the steeper gorge staircases.

Travel tips
Book the right train station, Understand private car restrictions, Arrange guesthouse meals ahead +1
Book the right train station
Make sure to book high-speed rail tickets to Deqing Station, which is the actual gateway to the mountain. Do not book Moganshan Station on the Hefei-Hangzhou line, which sits much farther away in Anji County.
Understand private car restrictions
Outside vehicles and taxis are generally not allowed to drive directly into the upper Moganshan Scenic Area during daytime hours. Unless you hike up from Yucun, you must leave cars at the village transfer center and take the park shuttle bus to the summit.
Arrange guesthouse meals ahead
If you stay in quieter valley villages like Xiantan or Houwu, dining options within walking distance after dark can be limited. Let your guesthouse host know by midday if you want a home-cooked dinner prepared for the evening.
Pack grippy shoes and layers
Stone steps under the bamboo canopy stay damp and mossy year-round, and summit temperatures drop noticeably in the evening. Bring footwear with solid traction and a light jacket even in warmer months.
How to get to Moganshan
Most travelers arrive by high-speed train at Deqing Railway Station, which takes about 15 minutes from Hangzhou East Station or roughly 70 minutes from Shanghai Hongqiao Station. From Deqing Station, it is a 30-to-40-minute taxi or local bus ride to the main hub of Yucun at the foot of the mountain. The nearest major air hub is Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, about a 90-minute drive away.
