Xidi

西递

A UNESCO-listed Huizhou clan village of Ming and Qing merchant mansions, carved stone archways, and quiet bluestone lanes.

Xidi is a compact, boat-shaped village in southern Anhui where generations of wealthy Huizhou merchants built high-walled courtyard homes during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Over a hundred historic residences survive along its three streams and dark bluestone alleys, recognizable by their whitewashed horse-head gables, sky-well courtyards, and intricate wood, brick, and stone carvings. Compared with neighboring Hongcun, Xidi feels less commercial and more focused on architectural detail and clan history.

Half a day is enough to walk the lanes, though staying one night in a converted merchant house inside the old village lets you experience the streets before day-trippers arrive. Base yourself either right inside Xidi or in nearby Hongcun, which makes day trips to Nanping, Tachuan, or Mukeng Bamboo Forest easy. On a broader China itinerary, Xidi pairs naturally with Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), Hangzhou, and Shanghai. It suits architecture lovers, photographers, and slow walkers, while travelers looking for lively nightlife or big-ticket spectacle may feel underwhelmed.

Travel tips

Keep your entry ticket handy, Hire a local guide at the entrance, Pack flat shoes and luggage wheels you trust +1

  • Keep your entry ticket handy

Your passport acts as your ticket or is linked to a paper pass that grants multi-day re-entry if you stay inside the village, and staff check it at the perimeter gates.

  • Hire a local guide at the entrance

The architectural symbolism and wordplay in the wooden carvings and couplets are easy to miss on your own, so an official guide or audio tour adds huge value.

  • Pack flat shoes and luggage wheels you trust

The historic lanes are paved with uneven bluestone slabs and crossed by stone thresholds; ask your guesthouse host to meet you at the entrance gate to help with heavy bags.

  • Walk the lanes at dawn

Tour groups typically arrive between mid-morning and mid-afternoon, leaving the early morning mist and late afternoon light peaceful for photography.
