Kangding
康定
A rushing river gorge town where Sichuan's lowlands meet the Tibetan plateau along the old Tea-Horse Road.
Wedged into a steep river gorge where the Sichuan Basin meets the Tibetan Plateau, Kangding is a historic Tea-Horse Road border town and the capital of Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. While modern buildings line the roaring Zheduo River, hillside monasteries, prayer flags, and Khampa traders give the streets an unmistakable frontier atmosphere. Sitting at around 2,560 meters above sea level, the city works well as an acclimatization stop before climbing deeper into the mountains.
Most travelers spend two to three days in Kangding to adjust to the altitude and explore the surrounding peaks. Base yourself in the town center near Liuliucheng Walking Street or around Kangding Bus Station in Dongguan for easy access to shared taxis, yak hotpot restaurants, and evening Tibetan circle dances by Rainbow Bridge. From town, Mugecuo Scenic Area and Zheduo Mountain Pass make rewarding day trips, while Hailuogou Glacier Park and the Tagong grasslands lie within easy reach. Kangding pairs naturally with Chengdu, Danba, and Litang on a western Sichuan overland route; it suits road-trippers and hikers drawn to high-altitude scenery, though travelers expecting a quiet, traditional village in the concrete town center itself may be underwhelmed.

01Zheduo Mountain Pass
Sitting at 4,298 meters along National Highway 318 just west of town, this windswept pass marks the geographical divide between the汉 valleys and the Tibetan plateau. On clear days, the ridge offers sweeping views toward snow-capped Mount Gongga.
必看02Mugecuo Scenic Area
Located about an hour north of Kangding, this high-altitude park centers on a deep alpine lake framed by rhododendron forests and granite peaks at 3,700 meters. Sightseeing buses carry visitors to the top lake, and wooden boardwalks wind down past cascades and hot-spring pools.
必看03Paomashan
Rising directly above the town center, this flat-topped hill was made famous across China by the Kangding Love Song. Visitors can ride a cable car or hike up steep trails through pine woods to see a white Tibetan stupa, prayer flags, and views over the river gorge.
04Nanwu Monastery
Set on the western edge of town, this active Gelugpa Tibetan Buddhist monastery dates back to the Northern Song era and remains one of the best places in Kangding to watch resident monks debate and walk the kora circuit alongside locals.
05Anjue Monastery
Tucked directly behind the busy streets of central Kangding, this compact yellow-walled Gelugpa temple offers a quiet courtyard filled with spinning prayer wheels and butter-lamp shrines right in the middle of town.

Pace yourself for the altitude
Kangding town sits at about 2,560 meters, which is manageable for most travelers, but nearby excursions like Mugecuo and Zheduo Mountain Pass climb quickly above 3,700 meters. Spend your first night resting in town before ascending higher, and avoid alcohol on arrival.
Arrange shared taxis in the morning
Public buses to surrounding sights like Tagong, Xinduqiao, and Mugecuo are infrequent, so most independent travelers use shared cars that gather near Kangding Bus Station and along the riverfront. Head out before 8:30 AM when drivers fill seats fastest.
Pack layers for sudden weather shifts
Even in summer, temperatures drop sharply once the sun dips behind the gorge walls or when you drive up to Zheduo Mountain Pass. Carry a windproof jacket, fleece, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen year-round.
Keep cash on hand for rural stops
WeChat Pay and Alipay work everywhere inside Kangding town, but mobile signal can drop at high passes, roadside viewpoints, and smaller monastery gates. Carry small-denomination renminbi notes for rural toilets, snacks, and shared minivan fares.

How to get to Kangding
Most visitors arrive overland from Chengdu, the nearest major rail and aviation hub. Long-distance buses depart frequently from Chengdu Xinnanmen Bus Station and Chadianzi Bus Station, taking around 4 to 6 hours via the Ya'an-Kangding Expressway, depending on mountain traffic. Shared minivans and taxis also run between Chengdu and Kangding. Kangding Airport sits high in the mountains near Zheduo Mountain Pass at over 4,200 meters, with limited flights from Chengdu and Chongqing, though arriving straight by air increases the risk of altitude sickness.
