Kuqa

库车

Ancient seat of the Buddhist Kingdom of Qiuci, framed by red sandstone canyons and the southern terminus of the Duku Highway.

Once the capital of the ancient Buddhist Kingdom of Qiuci, Kuqa sits between the southern foothills of the Tianshan Mountains and the Taklamakan Desert. Long before Islam reached Xinjiang, this oasis was one of Central Asia's premier centers of Buddhist translation and art, leaving behind mud-brick temple ruins and rock-cut grottoes that predate Dunhuang. Today it is also the southern terminus of the Duku Highway. It is a natural pivot between northern Xinjiang's alpine grasslands and the Silk Road towns of the Tarim Basin.

Give Kuqa two to three days: one for the old town on the west side of the city, and one or two for a chartered car loop out to the Kizil Caves, Subash Buddhist Ruins, and Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon. Most independent travelers base in the modern eastern district near Tianshan Road for easier hotel check-in, then take quick taxis into the old quarter around Reheman Street. Kuqa pairs naturally on a southern Xinjiang rail route with Korla, Aksu, and Kashgar, or with Bayanbulak and Yining if driving north in summer. It suits history buffs and road-trippers best, while travelers expecting polished resort infrastructure or lively nightlife may be underwhelmed.

Highlights

Kizil Caves, Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon, Subash Buddhist Ruins +2

  • 01Kizil Caves

Carved into cliffs above the Muzat River starting in the 3rd century, this is China's earliest major Buddhist cave complex. A guided visit reveals distinct Qiuci-style diamond murals and vaulted meditation chambers.

  • 02Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon

A dramatic 5-kilometer gorge of wind- and water-sculpted red sandstone along the southern stretch of the Duku Highway. Narrow, twisting passages catch shifting shafts of light before opening into wider mountain valleys.

  • 03Subash Buddhist Ruins

The weathered rammed-earth stupas, walls, and monastery foundations of an expansive temple complex that flourished from the Wei through Tang dynasties, straddling the Kuqa River against a stark mountain backdrop.

  • 04Kuqa Grand Mosque

Sitting on high ground in the old town, Xinjiang's second-largest mosque features a spacious brick prayer hall, carved wooden pillars, and a rare religious court building dating primarily to a 1931 reconstruction.

  • 05Restan Street and Kuqa Old Town

A lively corridor of traditional Uyghur courtyard homes known for brightly painted wooden doors, carved latticework, and neighborhood bakeries pulling giant wheel-sized Kuqa naan from clay tandoor ovens.

Travel tips

Hire a car for outer sights, Expect strict camera rules at Kizil, Watch canyon weather forecasts +1

  • Hire a car for outer sights

The Kizil Caves, Subash Ruins, and Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon sit 20 to 70 kilometers outside town with sparse public transit. Hiring a private driver for the day is the only practical way to link them.

  • Expect strict camera rules at Kizil

All bags and cameras must be checked into lockers before entering the Kizil Caves, and you can only visit open grottoes in small groups led by a site guide. Bring a small flashlight to see mural details in dim caves.

  • Watch canyon weather forecasts

Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon is a narrow slot gorge prone to flash floods and rockfalls, and authorities close it promptly whenever rain is forecast in the mountains. Check conditions before driving out.

  • Follow Xinjiang time and ID checks

Keep your passport handy at all times for routine highway, rail, and attraction checkpoints. Hotels and trains run on Beijing Time, though summer daylight stretches past 10 pm and local meals run two hours later than in eastern China.
