Day trip or overnight from Qinhuangdao
Beidaihe
北戴河
Northern China's classic Bohai Sea retreat, known for pine-shaded beaches, migratory bird wetlands, and summer political conclaves.
Tucked along the Bohai Sea in Hebei Province, Beidaihe is a coastal district of Qinhuangdao that has served as northern China's classic summer retreat since the late 19th century. Known equally for its pine-shaded villas where party leaders hold annual summer conclaves and its status as a major East Asian bird-watching hub, it offers calm sandy bays, rocky headlands, and a nostalgic seaside atmosphere.
Two to three days is plenty for Beidaihe and the wider coast. Base yourself near Tiger Rock Park (Laohushi) or Liuzhuang for easy beach access and lively seafood night markets, or head south to the Aranya community along the Gold Coast if you prefer contemporary architecture and quieter sands. The standout day trip is east to Shanhaiguan and Old Dragon's Head (Laolongtou), where the Ming-era Great Wall plunges into the sea. Sitting on the main rail corridor to the northeast, Beidaihe pairs naturally with Beijing, Tianjin, or Shenyang. It suits birders, families, and travelers curious about domestic Chinese resort culture, though anyone expecting tropical turquoise water or empty sands in mid-summer will be underwhelmed.

01Pigeon Nest Park (Geziwo Park)
Set on a rocky bluff at the northeastern tip of Beidaihe, this cliffside park is famous for sunrise views over the Bohai Sea and vast tidal mudflats. In spring and autumn, the adjacent wetlands become one of China's premier vantage points for watching migrating shorebirds and cranes.
必看02Beidaihe Beach and Tiger Rock Park (Laohushi)
A long stretch of golden sand divided into swimming zones, anchored by a cluster of wave-carved boulders that resemble crouching tigers. It is the social heart of the resort in summer, surrounded by cafes, seafood stalls, and coastal walking paths.
必看03Lianfeng Mountain Park
Forested hills rising just inland from the coast, dotted with early 20th-century villas, granite boulders, and quiet trails. Climbing to the Wanghai Pavilion at the summit rewards you with a sweeping panorama of pine canopy, red-tiled roofs, and the coastline.
04Shanhaiguan and Old Dragon's Head (Laolongtou)
Located about 40 minutes northeast across Qinhuangdao, this historic fortress pass marks the eastern end of the Ming Great Wall. At Old Dragon's Head, reconstructed stone battlements extend directly into the surf of the Bohai Sea.
05Aranya and the Nandaihe Gold Coast
Just south of Beidaihe proper, this stretch of coast features wide dunes and the gated architectural community of Aranya, home to the photogenic Seashore Library and Seaside Chapel. Day access requires booking ahead through the resort's official app or staying at an on-site hotel.

Book summer trains early
Weekend high-speed trains between Beijing and Beidaihe in July and August sell out within minutes of release. Reserve your seats as soon as tickets go on sale two weeks in advance.
Expect heightened security in summer
Because senior officials gather in Beidaihe during late July and August, you will encounter extra ID checks at the train station and roadblocks around restricted villa compounds. Always carry your physical passport.
Check tide and sunrise times
If you plan to visit Pigeon Nest Park for sunrise or mudflat combing, check local sunrise and low-tide schedules the night before. Park gates open before dawn during the warmer months.
Confirm seafood pricing upfront
When ordering fresh crab, shellfish, or fish at beachside restaurants, confirm whether the quoted weight is per jin (500 grams) or per dish before the kitchen cooks it to avoid bill surprises.
How to get to Beidaihe
Beidaihe Railway Station is well connected by high-speed rail to Beijing (about 1.5 to 2 hours) and Tianjin (around 1 to 1.5 hours), as well as northeastern hubs like Shenyang. From the train station, city buses and taxis take roughly 20 minutes to reach the main beach areas. Qinhuangdao Beidaihe Airport handles domestic flights from select Chinese cities, though most travelers find the high-speed train from Beijing or Tianjin faster and more convenient.
