Xiangyang
襄阳
Walk China's widest ancient moat and trace Three Kingdoms and Mongol siege history along the Han River.
Splitting the middle reaches of the Han River in northwestern Hubei, Xiangyang is an ancient military stronghold formed from two historic twin cities: walled Xiangyang on the south bank and commercial Fancheng on the north. It is famous across China as the wooded retreat of Three Kingdoms strategist Zhuge Liang and the site of the six-year Mongol siege that finally broke the Southern Song Dynasty. Today, its intact Ming-era ramparts and unusually wide moat still frame a lively, walkable old quarter.
Two full days are enough to cover the walled city and the western hills. Base yourself inside or just outside the Xiangcheng District walls near North Street so you can walk to the riverfront and ramparts after dark. The easiest nearby day trip is heading west into the hills for Ancient Longzhong, or continuing an hour further by rail to the Daoist peaks of Wudangshan. On a broader China route, Xiangyang sits neatly on the high-speed rail line between Wuhan, Zhengzhou, and Chongqing. It suits travelers drawn to military history, classic Chinese literature, and spicy beef noodle breakfasts, though visitors looking for dramatic karst scenery or English-friendly nightlife may be underwhelmed.

01Xiangyang City Wall and Moat
One of China's best-preserved city fortifications, encircled by a moat up to 250 meters wide that earned the city the nickname Iron Xiangyang. Climb up at Lindong Gate to walk the ramparts overlooking the Han River and the green waters of the moat.
必看02Ancient Longzhong (Gulongzhong)
Set in quiet hills 13 kilometers west of town, this valley marks the country retreat where warlord Liu Bei famously made three visits to recruit strategist Zhuge Liang. Shaded paths wind past reconstructed thatched cottages, Ming and Qing steles, and Wuhou Shrine.
必看03North Street (Beijie)
Running south from the riverfront gate inside the old city wall, this pedestrianized thoroughfare is lined with traditional gray-brick shopfronts. Come in the evening to sample local street snacks and watch residents gather around the lit gatehouse.
04Mi Fu Shrine (Migong Temple)
Facing the old city from the north bank of the Han River in Fancheng District, this quiet courtyard complex honors Song Dynasty calligrapher and painter Mi Fu. Its galleries display dozens of engraved stone tablets preserving his distinctive brush style.

Built as the backdrop for Chen Kaige's film Legend of the Demon Cat, this sprawling replica of Tang Dynasty Chang'an features canals, palaces, and bridges. It is particularly atmospheric during evening light shows and staged performances.

Travel tips
Check your train station, Start with Xiangyang beef noodles, Walk the wall at dusk +1
Check your train station
High-speed trains use Xiangyang East in Dongjin New District, while slower conventional trains pull into the older Xiangyang Station in Fancheng. Double-check your ticket before calling a taxi.
Start with Xiangyang beef noodles
The signature local breakfast is alkaline noodles topped with braised beef or offal in a fiery red chili oil broth, always paired with a bowl of mildly fermented glutinous rice wine (huangjiu) to cut the spice.
Walk the wall at dusk
The city ramparts have almost no shade, so midday walks are punishing in warm weather. Head up around sunset when the breeze comes off the Han River and the gate towers light up.
Use ride-hailing for Longzhong
Public buses run out to Ancient Longzhong, but they can be slow and crowded on weekends. Using a ride-hailing app built into Alipay or WeChat is a straightforward way to reach the west gate without haggling.
