Xichang

西昌

Sichuan's sun-soaked Yi capital, where a vast plateau lake meets purple jacaranda avenues and China's southwest spaceport.

Set in a sunny valley at 1,500 meters, Xichang is the capital of the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture and one of the brightest, mildest corners of notoriously overcast Sichuan. The city curls around the northern shore of Qionghai Lake under the wooded slopes of Lushan Mountain, blending rich Yi minority heritage and fiery street-side barbecue with its modern identity as the home of the Xichang Satellite Launch Center.

Give Xichang two to three days, basing yourself near Qionghai Lake for easy access to the waterfront boardwalks or around Jianchang Ancient City for evening food streets. The best day trip is south to the glacial lakes and cable cars of Luoji Mountain, alongside visits to Dashiban Ancient Village on the lake's eastern shore. Since the new Chengdu-Kunming rail line opened, Xichang slots naturally between Chengdu, Emeishan, Panzhihua, and Kunming on a southwest overland route. It is ideal for travelers seeking big skies, leisurely lakeside cycling, and ethnic culture, though visitors hoping to tour the space base itself may be underwhelmed as the launch facility is generally restricted to Chinese citizens.

  • Space center access rules

  • Pack serious sun protection

At 1,500 meters above sea level with well over 2,000 hours of annual sunshine, UV rays on Qionghai Lake are strong even in winter. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for lakeside cycling.

  • Book ahead for Torch Festival

During the Yi Torch Festival around the 24th day of the sixth lunar month (usually late July or August), tens of thousands of visitors pack the city. Reserve accommodation and train tickets weeks in advance.

  • Try Huopen net barbecue

Do not leave without trying Xichang's signature brazier barbecue (huopen shaokao), where marinated black pork, small intestines, and potatoes are grilled over charcoal on a wide bamboo-and-wire table.
