Yanji
延吉
China's capital of Korean culture, where neon signs glow in Hangul and spicy cold noodles fuel trips to Changbai Mountain.
As the capital of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture near the North Korean border, Yanji feels unlike anywhere else in China. Every shop sign is written in both Hangul and Chinese, Korean is spoken widely on the streets, and the city's culinary scene blends northeastern Chinese hearty flavors with traditional Korean cooking. It has become one of China's favorite food destinations and is the primary urban gateway to Changbai Mountain.
Two to three days is plenty to eat your way through Yanji and see its main sights. Base yourself near Yanbian University or the central riverbank for easy walking access to cafes, barbecue joints, and markets. For day trips, take the short high-speed train to the border town of Tumen to look across the Tumen River into North Korea, or head south to Changbai Mountain. Yanji pairs naturally with Changchun, Harbin, and Jilin City on a wider Northeast China itinerary. Food lovers and travelers curious about borderland cultures will love it here, though visitors looking for ancient temples or grand imperial monuments may feel underwhelmed.

Travel tips
Visit the morning market early, Book high-speed trains ahead, Expect long restaurant queues +1
Visit the morning market early
The Shuishang Market is strictly an early-morning affair; arrive between 6 AM and 7:30 AM before the best breakfast stalls sell out and pack up for the day.
Book high-speed trains ahead
Trains between Changchun, Yanji West, Tumen North, and Changbaishan sell out days in advance during summer and winter snow season, so reserve tickets as soon as bookings open.
Expect long restaurant queues
Famous cold noodle and barbecue spots draw long waits at peak meal times; use restaurant queuing apps via WeChat or eat slightly earlier in the afternoon.
Dress for extreme winter cold
If visiting between November and March, pack thermal base layers, insulated boots, and a heavy down coat, as temperatures regularly plunge well below freezing.
