Day trip from Yichang
Three Gorges Dam
三峡大坝
The world's largest hydroelectric station, where cargo ships climb five-stage locks beside a two-kilometer barrier across the Yangtze.
Spanning more than two kilometers across the Yangtze River in Yichang, the Three Gorges Dam is the largest hydroelectric power station on earth and a monument of modern Chinese engineering. Visitors do not walk across the dam wall itself, but instead ride shuttle buses between landscaped viewpoints, massive five-stage ship locks, and engineering parks set into the surrounding granite hills. Seeing cargo vessels step up and down the river next to a concrete barrier holding back a 600-kilometer reservoir is the main draw.
The dam takes about half a day to see, so most travelers base themselves in central Yichang near the Binjiang Park waterfront or the Three Gorges Visitor Center in Wujiagang District for one or two nights. You can easily pair the site with a Two Dams and One Gorge boat trip through Xiling Gorge and the Gezhouba Dam, or take a day excursion to the Three Gorges Tribe Scenic Area and Qingjiang Gallery. Yichang fits naturally between Wuhan and Chongqing on an overland or Yangtze cruise route, and also connects well to Zhangjiajie. Travelers fascinated by megaprojects and river shipping will appreciate it, though anyone expecting untouched canyon wilderness right at the dam may find the tightly managed shuttle circuit and distant platforms underwhelming.

Tanziling Viewing Platform, Five-Stage Ship Locks, 185 Viewing Platform +2
01Tanziling Viewing Platform
Built on a 262-meter ridge overlooking the project site, this is the highest vantage point in the park and the primary dam viewing platform. On a clear day, it offers a sweeping bird's-eye panorama of the entire concrete wall, the upstream reservoir, and the surrounding granite hills.
必看02Five-Stage Ship Locks
Viewed from alongside Tanziling, these twin lock chambers act like a giant water staircase that raises and lowers 10,000-ton freighters over a 113-meter difference in river level. Watching multiple vessels slowly lock through the deep rock-cut channels takes patience, as a full transit takes around three hours.
必看03185 Viewing Platform
Named for its elevation of 185 meters above sea level, this roadside plaza sits at the exact height of the dam crest on the northern bank. It puts you nearly eye-level with the calm reservoir waters and offers a close view of the vertical ship lift structure.
04River Closure Memorial Park
Located downstream on the southern bank of the Yangtze, this open-air park faces the front wall of the dam head-on. It displays gigantic dump trucks, colossal boulders, and concrete tetrapods used to block the river course during construction, and is the best spot to photograph spillway discharges.
05Three Gorges Project Museum
Situated across from the River Closure Memorial Park, this large engineering museum chronicles the history, hydrology, and construction of the dam. Scale models and historical footage help put the massive physical structures outside into context.

Bring Your Physical Passport, Leave Drones and Lighters Behind, Plan for Shuttle Bus Hops +1
Bring Your Physical Passport
The dam is a high-security zone with strict identity and bag screening at the Tourist Transfer Center. Foreign visitors must carry their original physical passport to register and board the mandatory park shuttle buses.
Leave Drones and Lighters Behind
Security checks at the visitor center are thorough, equivalent to airport screening. Drones, lighters, and flammable items are strictly prohibited inside the dam zone and will be confiscated or held at the checkpoint.
Plan for Shuttle Bus Hops
Private cars and taxis cannot drive inside the scenic zone, and distances between viewpoints are too far to walk. Every visitor must use the internal sightseeing bus loop, so allow at least three to four hours for transfers and waiting times.
Pack Sun and Rain Protection
The viewing decks at Tanziling and the 185 Platform are vast concrete plazas with very little shade. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and drinking water in warm weather, as the reflection off the concrete and river can be intense.
How to get to Three Gorges Dam
Yichang is the gateway to the dam. High-speed trains reach Yichang East Railway Station in about 2 hours from Wuhan and 4.5 hours from Chongqing, while Yichang Sanxia Airport handles domestic flights about 45 minutes from downtown. From Yichang East Station or the downtown Three Gorges Visitor Center near Wanda Plaza, dedicated tourist buses and public Bus 809 run to the Three Gorges Dam Tourist Transfer Center in roughly 1 hour. Many visitors also arrive on half-day sightseeing boats cruising upstream from downtown Yichang through Xiling Gorge.
