Yuntaishan
云台山
Rust-red quartz sandstone canyons, emerald pools, and seasonal cascades carved into the southern Taihang Mountains near Jiaozuo.
Yuntaishan is a UNESCO Global Geopark on the outskirts of Jiaozuo in northern Henan, where deep gorges of ancient red quartz sandstone contrast sharply with jade-green water and tiered waterfalls. Unlike many Chinese mountain parks that demand hours of grueling stair climbing, its headline sights sit deep inside narrow canyon floors threaded by cliff-hugging walkways. Higher up, limestone peaks and forested ridges round out the landscape with sweeping Taihang Mountain views.
Plan on two days to see both the lower gorges and the upper peaks without rushing, basing yourself inside the park at Anshang Service Area, a lively village full of guesthouses and family restaurants connected directly to the park shuttles. From here, you can also make easy side trips to outlying sectors like Qinglong Gorge or nearby Chenjiagou, the birthplace of Chen-style Tai Chi. Yuntaishan pairs naturally with a Central Plains itinerary linking Zhengzhou, Luoyang, and Kaifeng. It suits walkers and photographers looking for dramatic canyon scenery on accessible paths, though travelers seeking untamed backcountry trails or solitude may find the paved walkways and crowds underwhelming.

Highlights
Red Stone Gorge, Tanpu Gorge, Quanpu Gorge and Yuntai Sky Fall +2
01Red Stone Gorge
A two-kilometer sunken canyon of striking rust-red quartz sandstone where narrow stone paths wind along sheer cliff walls above emerald pools and waterfalls. Because the walkway is one-way and carved into the rock face, visiting early in the morning offers the best light and fewest bottlenecks.
必看02Tanpu Gorge
Known locally as Three Steps One Spring and Five Steps One Waterfall, this lush valley follows a clear mountain stream past travertine pools, cascades, and smooth stone slabs. The gentle incline makes it an easy, refreshing walk into the upper valley.
必看03Quanpu Gorge and Yuntai Sky Fall
A quiet three-kilometer valley hike leading to the base of the Yuntai Sky Fall, a seasonal waterfall that plunges 314 meters down a sheer cliff face. The cascade is at its most dramatic after summer rains in July and August, often shrinking to a trickle in dry months.
04Zhuyu Peak and Fenghuangling Glass Skywalk
The park's 1,297-meter main summit, celebrated in classic Tang dynasty poetry by Wang Wei and crowned by a historic Taoist temple. Visitors can hike or ride a cable car up through winding mountain ridges and walk across a cliffside glass skywalk overlooking the valleys.
05Diecai Cave
A series of spiral highway tunnels blasted directly through the cliffs along the shuttle bus route to Zhuyu Peak. As the bus climbs, gaps between the tunnels reveal sudden, dizzying views of the surrounding Taihang ridges.

Use the Park Shuttle Network
Attractions are spread across a vast area and connected by an internal shuttle bus system that is required for all visitors. Keep your ID or pass handy, as entry is verified at each boarding point and gorge entrance.
Base Inside at Anshang Village
Book a guesthouse in Anshang Service Area inside the park perimeter rather than commuting from Jiaozuo city. Staying inside gives you quick access to the main shuttle hub for an early start at Red Stone Gorge and plenty of casual dining options at night.
Prepare for a One-Way Canyon Walk
The path through Red Stone Gorge is strictly one-way with no turnarounds, taking roughly 90 minutes to two hours from entrance to exit onto the Zifang Lake dam. Use the restroom and bring water before descending into the canyon.
Check Waterfall Flow in Dry Months
The tall waterfall at the end of Quanpu Gorge depends heavily on summer rainfall and can dry up in spring or late autumn. Ask your guesthouse host or staff at the entrance about current water flow before committing to the three-kilometer walk.
