Zigong

自贡

Southern Sichuan's historic salt-well capital, home to an in-situ dinosaur fossil quarry, giant lantern displays and fiery Yanbang cuisine.

Zigong is a mid-sized southern Sichuan city built on two millennia of deep-well brine mining and a rich vein of Jurassic fossils. Known across China for three signatures, it pairs a major dinosaur excavation site with intact Qing-dynasty salt guild halls and the country's largest illuminated lantern festival. Even more compelling for many visitors is Yanbangcai, the fierce local branch of Sichuan cuisine seasoned with fresh ginger, young chilies and well salt.

Give Zigong one full day or an overnight stay, basing yourself in central Ziliujing District along the Fuxi River for easy access to museums and evening dining. From the center, you can take quick half-day outings to riverfront Xianshi Ancient Town or the Rongxian Giant Buddha to the west. Because it sits on the southern Sichuan high-speed rail corridor, Zigong slots neatly between Chengdu, Leshan and Yibin or Chongqing. It rewards dinosaur enthusiasts, industrial-history buffs and serious spice lovers, though travelers seeking dramatic mountain scenery or polished tourist districts may find its gritty urban edges underwhelming.

Travel tips

Brace for real heat at meals, Book lantern festival tickets ahead, Pair Da'an sights in one trip +1

  • Brace for real heat at meals

Zigong's Yanbang cuisine is considered spicier than standard Chengdu food, especially signature dishes like cold diced rabbit and boiled beef. Ask for wei la (mild spicy) if your tolerance is moderate.

  • Book lantern festival tickets ahead

If visiting between January and March for the lantern festival at China Lantern World, reserve timed-entry tickets online through WeChat or Trip.com a few days in advance, especially on weekends.

  • Pair Da'an sights in one trip

The Zigong Dinosaur Museum and Shenhai Well are both in Da'an District, only about 10 minutes apart by taxi, so visit them together before heading back to Ziliujing District.

  • Use ride-hailing between districts

Zigong has no metro system and its main sights are spread across several valleys, so Didi or metered taxis are the most practical way to hop between the high-speed rail station, museums and restaurants.
