Handan
邯郸
A 3,000-year-old Warring States capital with sixth-century Buddhist grottoes, moated Ming walls, and the birthplace of Yang-style taiji.
Handan is one of the few cities in China that has kept the same name for over 3,000 years, serving in antiquity as the powerful capital of the State of Zhao during the Warring States period. Today it is a gritty, working-class Hebei city whose modern sprawl conceals remarkable historical weight, from the imperial Buddhist carvings of the Xiangtangshan Caves to the earthen palace mounds of Zhaowang City. Chinese speakers also know it as the country's capital of idioms, with hundreds of classical four-character phrases rooted in local history and folklore.
Two days is plenty to cover the essentials. Base yourself centrally in Congtai District near Congtai Park for easy access to the Handan Museum and the Zhaowang City ruins on the southwestern edge of town. From the center, you can make half-day or full-day trips out to the Xiangtangshan Caves in Fengfeng Mining District, the moated Ming ramparts of Guangfu Ancient City, or the cliffside Wahuang Palace in hilly Shexian County. Handan sits directly on the main north-south high-speed rail line, so it pairs naturally with Anyang just across the Henan border, as well as Beijing, Shijiazhuang, and Zhengzhou. Travelers drawn to early Chinese archaeology, Buddhist stone art, and traditional Yang-style taiji will find plenty to appreciate here, while visitors looking for polished tourist quarters or dramatic urban skylines may feel underwhelmed.

Xiangtangshan Caves, Guangfu Ancient City, Zhaowang City +2
01Xiangtangshan Caves
Carved into the Taihang foothills during the sixth-century Northern Qi dynasty, these imperial Buddhist grottoes are split into northern and southern sites about 15 kilometers apart. Despite early twentieth-century looting, the northern caves still hold monumental reliefs and towering rock-cut pillars.
必看02Guangfu Ancient City
Surrounded by a wide moat and intact Ming-era brick walls, this historic water town northeast of downtown is the birthplace of Yang-style and Wu-style taiji. Visitors can walk or cycle the ramparts, tour the former residences of masters Yang Luchan and Wu Yuxiang, and cross the stone Hongji Bridge.
必看03Zhaowang City
The archaeological remains of the Warring States capital of Zhao spread across a vast park on the southwestern edge of the city. Massive rammed-earth palace platforms rise from the plain alongside an underground museum displaying fourth- and third-century BCE bronzes and architectural tiles.
04Congtai Park
Built around the reconstructed Wuling Congtai terrace in the heart of the city, this lakeside park marks where King Wuling of Zhao reviewed his troops and watched performances over 2,000 years ago. Climbing the brick terrace offers views over downtown, while nearby Xuebu Bridge recalls a famous local idiom.
05Wahuang Palace
Tucked into the Taihang Mountains in Shexian County west of Handan, this dramatic complex clings to a sheer cliff face tethered by iron chains. Alongside Ming and Qing pavilions dedicated to the creator goddess Nuwa, the cliff rock bears extensive sixth-century Buddhist scriptures carved into the stone.

Focus on Northern Xiangtangshan, Book Museums Ahead, Getting to Outlying Sights +1
Focus on Northern Xiangtangshan
The Xiangtangshan Caves are divided into Northern and Southern sites about 15 kilometers apart in Fengfeng Mining District. If you only have half a day, prioritize Northern Xiangtangshan, which has the largest imperial caves, a solid site museum, and an impressive tenth-century brick pagoda.
Book Museums Ahead
Both the Handan Museum and the museum inside Zhaowang City Archaeological Site Park are closed on Mondays and require passport registration. Reserve entry slots on WeChat a day or two ahead, and bring your physical passport for verification at the gate.
Getting to Outlying Sights
While Congtai Park and Zhaowang City are quick taxi rides from the center, Guangfu Ancient City, the Xiangtangshan Caves, and Wahuang Palace sit 25 to 100 kilometers outside downtown. Use ride-hailing apps for Guangfu and Xiangtangshan, or hire a local driver for the day to combine remote stops.
Sun and Wind Protection
Zhaowang City and the ramparts of Guangfu Ancient City have wide stretches of open ground with minimal shade. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water in warmer months, and pack a windproof layer if visiting in late autumn or winter.
