Day trip from Kunming
Dongchuan Red Land
东川红土地
Highland farms northeast of Kunming where iron-rich crimson soil and seasonal crops form vast, colorful patchworks across the hills.
Northeast of Kunming in the mountains of Yunnan, Dongchuan Red Land is a working agricultural landscape where oxidized iron and copper deposits give the soil a deep crimson hue. Across rolling hills at around 2,000 meters above sea level, farmers plant alternating plots of potatoes, buckwheat, barley, and rapeseed, turning the slopes into a shifting patchwork of rust red, emerald green, and golden yellow. Unlike enclosed tourist parks, the area consists of scattered highland villages and open viewpoints stretched along winding mountain roads.
Give the area two days and one night so you can catch both sunset and sunrise, basing yourself in a family guesthouse in Huashitou Village at the junction of the three main sightseeing routes. From Huashitou, it is easy to loop out to viewpoints like Luoxiagou and Damakan, or combine the drive with a side trip to Jiaozi Snow Mountain to the west. Dongchuan pairs naturally with Kunming, Dali, or the Yuanyang Rice Terraces on a broader Yunnan itinerary. Landscape photographers and road-trippers will love the dramatic light and rural pace, while travelers seeking walkable towns, nightlife, or guaranteed views in foggy weather may leave underwhelmed.

01Luoxiagou (Sunset Valley)
A vast, sunken amphitheater of terraced red fields and clustered village roofs surrounded by dark mountain ridges. Late afternoon is the prime time to visit, when low sunlight breaks through the clouds and lights up the patchwork slopes.
必看02Huashitou Village
The central hub of the scenic area, where three main viewing routes meet amid layered terraces of red soil and seasonal crops. Most visitors stay in the village's family-run inns and walk out to nearby ridges like Yuepuao (Music Score Hollow).
03Damakan
A high vantage point on the northern route looking down over a broad basin of red earth and morning mist. Arrive before dawn to watch the first light hit the fields and smoke rise from the chimneys of Damakan Village below.
必看04Jinxiuyuan and Qicaipo
Two adjacent hillside viewpoints along the northwest route known for sweeping, multi-colored stripes of farmland that shift tones with the afternoon sun. Wide viewing decks look out over undulating ridges of red dirt, green barley, and white flowers.
05Thousand-Year Dragon Tree
A solitary, centuries-old pine standing on a crest of red farmland near Huashitou Village. Revered by local villagers as a protector of the land, it is a striking focal point against the bare crimson hills.

Arrange local transport ahead
Attractions are spread along three mountain roads covering dozens of kilometers with no shuttle buses. If you arrive by public bus, ask your Huashitou guesthouse host to arrange a local car and driver for your sunrise and sunset loops.
Pack warm layers for dawn
At elevations above 2,000 meters, mornings at Damakan and evenings at Luoxiagou are windy and cold even in late spring and autumn. Bring a windproof jacket and warm layers for waiting at exposed viewpoints.
Respect local farmers and props
Elderly villagers in traditional dress sometimes sit with pipe and sheep at popular viewpoints; they expect a small tip if you photograph them. Stay on established paths and dirt bunds rather than stepping into planted soil.
Carry some cash
WeChat Pay and Alipay work at most Huashitou guesthouses and restaurants, but small cash notes are useful for roadside snack stalls, village parking areas, or tipping local models where mobile signal can be spotty.
How to get to Dongchuan Red Land
Kunming is the gateway, with Kunming Changshui International Airport and Kunming South Railway Station connecting by high-speed rail to cities across China. From Kunming Northern Passenger Transport Station, direct long-distance buses run to the Dongchuan Red Land scenic area around Huashitou Village in about 3.5 to 4 hours. Because the viewpoints are spread kilometers apart with no local public transit between them, most independent travelers either rent a car in Kunming or hire a private driver for the 3-hour mountain drive northeast.
