Songpan

松潘

A high-altitude Ming garrison town where Tibetan, Qiang, Hui, and Han cultures meet at the trailhead to northern Sichuan's alpine valleys.

Sitting at roughly 2,850 meters on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, Songpan is a walled Ming Dynasty garrison and tea-horse trading town straddling the rushing Min River. Unlike many rebuilt ancient towns in China, it still functions as a working crossroads where Tibetan, Qiang, Hui, and Han locals trade yak meat, wild mushrooms, and wool beneath massive stone gates. Its crisp mountain air and rugged highland backdrop make it both an atmospheric acclimatization stop and an active outdoor base.

Give Songpan one to two days to explore the town and nearby valleys, or three to four days if you sign up for a backcountry horse trek. Base yourself inside or just outside the North Gate of Songpan Ancient City, where timbered guesthouses and trekking outfitters cluster near casual Hui and Tibetan eateries. Top day trips include the travertine cascades of Muni Valley and the turquoise calcified pools of Huanglong Scenic Area, and the town pairs naturally with Chengdu, Jiuzhaigou, and Langmusi on an overland route between Sichuan and southern Gansu. Independent trekkers and travelers drawn to frontier grit will feel right at home, while visitors expecting polished resort comforts or a pristine museum town may be underwhelmed.

Highlights

Songpan Ancient City Walls and Gates, Highland Horse Trekking, Muni Valley Scenic Area +2

  • 01Songpan Ancient City Walls and Gates

Built during the Ming Dynasty to guard the frontier, these thick stone ramparts and arched gates still frame the old town along the Min River. You can climb the restored sections for sweeping views over timbered roofs, mosques, and the surrounding mountain ridges.

  • 02Highland Horse Trekking

Local collectives run guided one-day to multi-day horse and camping treks into the surrounding alpine valleys, forests, and mineral hot springs. Expect rustic backcountry conditions, campfire meals, and high passes where you will walk downhill sections to rest the horses.

  • 03Muni Valley Scenic Area

Located about 40 minutes southwest of town, this forested Tibetan valley splits into two routes featuring Zhaga Waterfall, a towering calcified travertine cascade, and Erdao Lake, a string of clear alpine pools ringed by pine woods. It stays much quieter than neighboring national parks.

  • 04Huanglong Scenic Area

Situated within Songpan County below snow-draped Xuebaoding Peak, Huanglong is famous for its long ribbon of yellow and turquoise travertine terraces. A cable car and wooden boardwalks make it an easy half-day or full-day excursion from the old town.

  • 05Guanyin Pavilion

Perched on a steep hillside overlooking the western edge of the ancient town, this temple complex rewards a short, breathless climb with panoramic views of Songpan's walled grid and the Min River valley.

Travel tips

Respect the altitude, Pack for four seasons, Clarify horse trek details upfront +1

  • Respect the altitude

Songpan sits at 2,850 meters and nearby passes exceed 3,500 meters. It is a smart place to acclimatize before visiting Huanglong. Take it easy on your first afternoon, stay hydrated, and avoid flying directly into Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport if you are prone to altitude sickness.

  • Pack for four seasons

Even in July and August, mountain weather shifts rapidly from intense plateau sun to chilly rain, and nighttime temperatures on horse treks drop near freezing. Bring thermal layers, a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, and sturdy waterproof footwear.

  • Clarify horse trek details upfront

Multi-day treks are rustic, with basic small tents, simple camp food, and guides who speak limited English. Confirm what gear is provided before setting off, and borrow a heavy canvas coat and rubber boots from the outfitter if rain is in the forecast.

  • Book rail tickets early in peak season

High-speed trains between Chengdu and Songpan sell out quickly during summer weekends and autumn foliage season. Reserve your seats as soon as booking opens and arrange shared transfers to Huanglong or Jiuzhaigou through your guesthouse a day ahead.
