Xiahe

夏河

A high-altitude Tibetan monastic town in southern Gansu, anchored by the three-kilometer prayer wheel circuit of Labrang Monastery.

Tucked into a narrow river valley on the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, Xiahe is the spiritual heart of the Gannan region. The town revolves around Labrang Monastery, one of the six great Gelugpa monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism and home to the largest monastic university outside the Tibet Autonomous Region. Because it lies in Gansu province, independent foreign travelers can experience deep Tibetan monastic life and alpine grasslands here without special travel permits.

Give Xiahe two to three days and base yourself along Renmin West Road near the monastery entrance, where Tibetan guesthouses and cafes cluster within easy walking distance of the prayer halls. Spend a full day walking the Labrang kora and touring the halls, then take half-day or full-day excursions to the nearby Sangke Grassland or the cliff-ringed Ganjia Grassland, home to the cross-shaped Bajiao Walled Village and Baishiya Karst Cave. Xiahe pairs naturally with Lanzhou, Tongren in Qinghai, and Langmusi on an overland route between the Silk Road and northern Sichuan. It suits slow travelers, hikers, and anyone drawn to living religious culture, though visitors expecting polished resort comforts or nightlife may feel underwhelmed.

Travel tips

Acclimatize to the altitude, Follow monastery etiquette, Arrange shared cars for Ganjia +1

  • Acclimatize to the altitude

Xiahe sits at roughly 2,900 meters above sea level, and the surrounding grasslands climb above 3,000 meters. Take your first afternoon slowly, drink plenty of water, and pack warm layers even in summer, as temperatures drop sharply after sunset.

  • Follow monastery etiquette

Always walk the kora and circle stupas clockwise, and spin the prayer wheels with your right hand. Remove hats and sunglasses before entering temple halls, and never take photos inside the prayer halls or point a camera at pilgrims without asking permission.

  • Arrange shared cars for Ganjia

While Sangke Grassland is a quick taxi or bike ride away, Ganjia Grassland has limited public transit. Ask your guesthouse the evening before to help you join a shared car with other travelers so your driver can wait while you explore Bajiao Village and Baishiya Cave.

  • Check English tour times at Labrang

Access to the main assembly halls inside Labrang Monastery requires joining an official guided tour from the visitor center. English-speaking monk guides lead daily sessions, so verify the current morning and afternoon schedule as soon as you arrive.
