Day trip or overnight from Wenzhou
Yandangshan
雁荡山
An ancient Cretaceous caldera in coastal Zhejiang where rhyolite pinnacles change silhouette after dark.
Yandangshan, in Yueqing under Wenzhou in southeastern Zhejiang, is a UNESCO Global Geopark sculpted from a 120-million-year-old volcanic caldera. Unlike single-peak sacred mountains, it is a sprawling network of steep valleys, sheer rhyolite columns, cave temples built directly into overhangs, and high-drop waterfalls. Its signature draw is the way its jagged rock spires shift shape depending on your viewing angle and the evening light.
Give yourself two full days here and base yourself in Xianglingtou, the pedestrianized village at the park hub where most guesthouses, seafood restaurants, and shuttle buses converge. From Xianglingtou, it is easy to cover the core Three Wonders (Lingfeng, Lingyan, and Dalongqiu) and take a short side trip to the cliffside walkways at Fangdong or the quieter gorges around Xianshengmen. Yandangshan slots into an eastern China rail itinerary between Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou, and Xiamen, and pairs well with a nearby excursion to the Nanxi River. It suits hikers, photographers, and families looking for dramatic scenery on paved trails, though travelers seeking untouched wilderness may find the main valley circuits commercialized.

01Lingfeng Scenic Area and Night View
By day, you walk among towering rhyolite pinnacles and visit Guanyin Cave, a multi-story Buddhist temple wedged inside a natural rock fissure. Return after dark when subtle lighting and the evening sky turn the peaks, including Hezhang Peak, into shifting silhouettes.
必看02Dalongqiu Waterfall
Plunging nearly 200 meters down a sheer volcanic amphitheater, this is the park's highest waterfall. In the rainy season it thunders into an emerald pool below, while in drier months the water disperses into a shifting veil of mist halfway down the cliff.
必看03Lingyan Scenic Area and Flying Crossing
A flat valley floor leads to Lingyan Temple, framed by vertical monoliths like Tianzhu Peak and Zhanqi Peak. Twice daily, local performers staging the Lingyan Flying Crossing walk and slide along a high wire stretched more than 200 meters above the valley floor, a stunt rooted in traditional cliff-herb gathering.
04Fangdong Cliffside Walk and Iron Bridge
Reached by trail or cable car, Fangdong follows a natural rock gallery carved horizontally into a sheer cliff face. The walkway crosses a swaying suspension bridge high above the valley and passes caves, shrines, and a popular cliffside cafe.
05Sanzhepu (Three-Tiered Waterfall)
Less visited than the Three Wonders, this trail climbs past lower, middle, and upper tiers of a single stream. The middle tier is the standout, dropping over the lip of a hollowed volcanic cave where you can walk behind the curtain of water.

Understand the park layout
Yandangshan is not a single mountain you climb from bottom to top, but eight separate scenic zones spread across valleys. Use the green public shuttle buses in Xianglingtou to hop between trailheads rather than walking along the main roads.
Listen in at Lingfeng at night
Without context, the rock silhouettes at the Lingfeng night session can be hard to spot. Hire an official guide at the gate or walk slowly near domestic tour groups so you know exactly which footprints on the path line up with each silhouette.
Time Dalongqiu after rainfall
Because Dalongqiu has a small catchment area, its volume depends heavily on recent rain. If a shower rolls through during your stay, head straight to Dalongqiu afterward to see the waterfall at full force.
Keep your passport handy
Individual scenic zones require separate admissions or a combined multi-day pass linked to your ID. Foreign visitors must show a physical passport at the ticket windows and entry gates, and mobile payment via Alipay or WeChat Pay is standard everywhere.
How to get to Yandangshan
Yandangshan has its own stop, Yandangshan Railway Station, on the coastal high-speed rail line. Direct bullet trains take roughly 30 to 40 minutes from Wenzhou, 1.5 hours from Ningbo, 2 to 2.5 hours from Hangzhou, and 3 to 4 hours from Shanghai. From the station, local buses and taxis reach the main visitor base at Xianglingtou in about 15 minutes. The nearest airport is Wenzhou Longwan International Airport, around an hour away by car or a quick train ride from Wenzhou South.
