Day trip from Yantai
Penglai Pavilion
蓬莱阁
A Song-dynasty clifftop complex where the Bohai and Yellow Seas meet, famed for Eight Immortals legends and rare ocean mirages.
Perched on red Danya Mountain cliffs in the Penglai District of Yantai, Penglai Pavilion is one of the Four Great Towers of China. First built in 1061 during the Northern Song Dynasty, the complex blends Taoist and Buddhist halls with Ming-dynasty coastal defenses right where the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea converge. For centuries, travelers and poets have come here for its legendary connection to the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea and the rare Fata Morgana mirages that occasionally shimmer on the horizon.
Most visitors see the complex in a full day, either basing in central Yantai around Zhifu District or staying overnight near the Penglai beachfront. From Penglai, the easiest nearby day trip is a ferry ride north to the Changdao Islands for rugged coastal walks and fishing villages. The area pairs naturally with Yantai, Qingdao, Weihai, and Jinan on a Shandong Peninsula route. It suits travelers who enjoy maritime history, folklore, and breezy coastal paths, though those expecting untouched wilderness or untouched ancient wood may be underwhelmed by the heavy restorations and theme-park-style attractions surrounding the park.

Skip the fake guides at the gate
Tout guides and tricycle drivers outside the parking lots often try to steer visitors toward overpriced seafood restaurants or separate theme parks like Sanxian Mountain; walk straight to the official Penglai Pavilion ticket hall.
Bring a windproof layer
The exposed Danya Mountain cliffs catch strong sea gusts even in early summer and autumn, and the open-air cable car to Tianheng Mountain can feel chilly.
Carry your physical passport
Entry gates use real-name verification linked to ID cards, so foreign visitors need to show their original passport at the staffed ticket window and entry turnstiles.
Check seafood prices before ordering
Beachfront stalls outside the exit sell live catch by weight; confirm the unit weight and cooking fee upfront, or head into residential Penglai neighborhoods for clearer menu pricing.
