Day trip from Yining

Sayram Lake

赛里木湖

Xinjiang's highest alpine lake, where a 90-kilometer shoreline road loops past sapphire water, wildflower meadows, and snowpeaks.

Perched at over 2,000 meters in the Tian Shan mountains of Bortala Prefecture, Sayram Lake is Xinjiang's largest and highest alpine lake. Known locally as "the last tear of the Atlantic" because it marks the farthest reach of warm Atlantic air currents, its deep cobalt water sits ringed by snow-dusted peaks and seasonal wildflower meadows. Unlike many Chinese scenic parks that confine visitors to shuttle buses, Sayram Lake allows self-driving and cycling along its entire 90-kilometer shoreline.

One full day and a night is the sweet spot here, giving you time for the full circuit plus sunset and sunrise light. Most travelers base themselves in nearby Bole city for reliable hotels and restaurants, or book a lakeside camp near the East Gate to catch dawn over the water. The classic nearby excursion is driving through Guozigou Valley to see the towering Guozigou Bridge, and the lake pairs naturally with Yining, the Ili Valley grasslands, and Urumqi on a northern Xinjiang route. Road-trippers, photographers, and nature lovers will be thrilled, though travelers seeking historic architecture, urban comfort, or warm weather may feel underwhelmed by the raw, windy alpine setting.

Highlights

90-Kilometer Lakeside Loop, Songshutou (Pine Tree Head) and S-Curve Road, West Sea Grassland (Xihai Grassland) +2

  • 0190-Kilometer Lakeside Loop

Paved road encircling the entire lake, best driven or cycled clockwise from the East Gate. Unlike most major parks in China, private and rental cars are permitted inside, letting you pull over at bays, pebble beaches, and viewpoints at your own pace.

  • 02Songshutou (Pine Tree Head) and S-Curve Road

A wooden boardwalk climbs the ridge at the southern end of the lake, rewarding hikers with simultaneous views of Sayram Lake on one side and the dramatic Guozigou Bridge canyon on the other. Just north of Songshutou, the lakeside S-Curve Road frames snowpeaks, highway, and blue water in a single shot.

  • 03West Sea Grassland (Xihai Grassland)

Expansive alpine pasture on the western shore backed by snow-capped mountains. From mid-June to July, wildflowers bloom across the plain while horses and yaks graze down to the water's edge.

  • 04Kele Yongzhu

A shoreline area fed by natural underground springs that rarely freeze, even in deep winter. Resident swans gather in the clear shallows, and a lakeside walkway leads out to a small peninsula.

  • 05Dianjiangtai and Sunset Viewing

An elevated platform on the northwestern shore commemorating Genghis Khan's historic westward campaign. At dusk, the eastern and southern shores near the East Gate and Moon Bay offer prime sunset viewing as the distant peaks turn gold and pink.

Travel tips

Self-Drive Over Shuttle Buses, Pack Windproof Layers Year-Round, Bring Your Own Food and Water +1

  • Self-Drive Over Shuttle Buses

While park shuttle buses connect the main stops, renting a car or chartering a vehicle with a self-drive permit gives you far more freedom to stop at quiet beaches and stay for sunset after the last buses depart.

  • Pack Windproof Layers Year-Round

At 2,070 meters above sea level, the lake generates strong, biting winds even on sunny July afternoons. Bring a windproof jacket, fleece, and sun protection regardless of the forecast in Bole or Yining.

  • Bring Your Own Food and Water

Dining options inside the scenic area are limited to simple snack stalls, instant noodles, and a few basic restaurants near the gates and major stops. Stock up on snacks, fruit, and drinking water in Bole or Yining before entering.

  • Check Drone Registration Rules

Drones are popular for photographing the S-Curve Road and shoreline, but you must register your drone at the visitor center before flying and watch out for strong lakeside gusts.
