All destinations/Dali/Weishan Ancient Town

Weishan Ancient Town is a lived-in Ming and Qing dynasty walled town in western Yunnan that served as the 8th-century birthplace of the Nanzhao Kingdom. Unlike its more commercialized neighbors, its chessboard grid of 25 streets and 18 lanes still revolves around everyday Yi and Hui community life, traditional workshops, and braised-pork noodle stalls. Historic gate towers anchor the main north-south avenue, while pine-covered Weibaoshan rises just outside town with a cluster of mountainside Daoist temples.

Plan on one to two days in Weishan, basing yourself in a courtyard guesthouse tucked into the quiet lanes between Gongchen Tower and Xinggong Tower. Spend your first day wandering the old streets and the Nanzhao Museum, then use a second day for a half-day trip up Weibaoshan or out to the Hui caravan courtyards of Donglianhua Village. Sitting just south of Dali, Weishan fits easily into a classic Yunnan route linking Kunming, Dali, Shaxi, and Lijiang. It suits slow travelers, history buffs, and street-food enthusiasts looking for an unhurried alternative to busier ancient towns, though visitors seeking lively nightlife or grand imperial monuments may feel underwhelmed.

Highlights

Gongchen Tower and Xinggong Tower, Weibaoshan, Nanzhao Museum +2

  • 01Gongchen Tower and Xinggong Tower

These two landmark gate towers anchor the town's Ming-dynasty north-south axis. Originally built in 1390 and reconstructed after a 2015 fire, Gongchen Tower marks the northern gate, while the smaller Xinggong Tower sits at the central crossroads where four main streets meet.

  • 02Weibaoshan

Rising to around 2,500 meters just southeast of town, this forested mountain is one of China's fourteen recognized Daoist sacred peaks. Stone paths wind through old pines to over twenty Ming and Qing dynasty temples, including Changchun Cave with its intricate octagram ceiling carvings.

  • 03Nanzhao Museum

Set beside a former Buddhist temple site in the old town, this modern museum traces the rise of the 8th-century Nanzhao Kingdom from its origins in the Weishan valley. Exhibits include bronze artifacts, terracotta figures, and architectural relics that give essential context to the town.

  • 04Donglianhua Village

Located a short drive north of the old town, this Hui Muslim village grew wealthy from the ancient Tea Horse Road caravan trade. It preserves nearly thirty traditional residential compounds, highlighted by the grand Ma Family Courtyard with its defensive corner watchtowers and wood carvings.

  • 05One-Strand Noodles and Local Street Food

Weishan is famous across Yunnan for its snacks, especially Yigenmian (a single continuous strand of hand-pulled noodle served in rich braised pork broth) and grilled erkuai rice cakes. Most historic noodle shops operate for breakfast and lunch along the main street near Gongchen Tower.

Travel tips

Hiring transport for Weibaoshan, Eat noodle specialties early, Bring ID for the museum +1

  • Hiring transport for Weibaoshan

Public buses to Weibaoshan and Donglianhua Village are infrequent. Arrange a local taxi or ride-hailing car from the old town gates and agree on a return pickup time with your driver before heading up the mountain.

  • Eat noodle specialties early

Weishan's best-known braised pork noodle shops are primarily morning and midday spots. Many traditional kitchens sell out of their signature toppings by early afternoon, so go for breakfast or an early lunch.

  • Bring ID for the museum

Entry to the Nanzhao Museum requires registration with your passport at the entrance or via its WeChat mini-program, and the museum closes on Mondays.

  • Pack layers for the altitude

The town sits at roughly 1,700 meters and Weibaoshan climbs to 2,500 meters. Even when afternoon sunshine feels warm in the valley, shaded forest trails on the mountain and evenings in courtyard guesthouses get brisk.
